Paper 2
Concepts for High Availability Systems
Dr David Kalinsky
High availability systems must continue to provide service in the presence of both expected and unexpected faults. Their design is based upon redundant hardware and software combined in ways that will achieve “five-nines” (99.999%) or greater availability, equivalent to less than 1 second of downtime per day. In this first part of a 2-part series of talks, fundamental concepts for high availability system design will be surveyed, including replication, functional redundancy, analytic redundancy, checkpointing and rollback.
